This is my fav track from a mix picked up in lil senegal, in the porn/luggage selling place across from africa kine. Its a little old school sounding, afrobeat meets zouglou with badass lyrics. I always thought it was interesting that Magic System considered themselves zouglou, despite being the biggest group involved in the popularization of Coupe-Decale. Their older work is clearly zouglou, tho it often blends, zouglou less choppy/dancey on the more lyrically driven side of things.
I've been to Little Senegal a couple of times - unfortunately wasn't able to spend more than an hour there each time. I think I know the place you're talking about. There's another music store a little farther east along 116th that has scads of pirated CDs - I'm sure you've been there too. Any other suggestions about music stores, restaurants, etc. the next time I'm in NYC?
Well im no little senegal expert, I think your best shot would be ask somebody from the neighborhood what their favs are. Theres a bunch of shops & its cool to play a lot of stuff & remember to ask for track info which obvi arent on a lot of cds before you leave. I recommend africa kine, their thieboudienne is sooo good - its northern Senegalese style and a lot richer than how they make it at other places in the city. Pick up some attiya on the street if they have fresh mint, & beignets if theyre hot.
Yes, I like Africa Kine. My daughter & I got a mean Thiebou Yap & Mafe to go when we were there last April. & the service is fast, unlike a lot of African places.
I've been listening to Magic System at work all evening - Spotify has their last three albums - and I really like the 2001/2003 effort. Pity I missed them when they were in Stockholm this spring, but it really was a ridiculously expensive (and early-to-sell-out) affair - they should have booked them to a much larger venue.
An unabashed xenophile, my blog looks at emerging ideas and patterns in global pop music and its audience/reception. Unimpressed with majority music scholorship and journalism, I hope to bring my own perspective to the crowded behemoth that is music bloggery. Other intrests include tourism and nation branding, 'gayness' lived and concieved in pop, and the technologies that connect and divide us.
I recently worked for ACF doing sampling and mapping in Haiti, and will soon be heading back to school to officially pursue public health. I studied critical theory and religious studies at Hobart and William Smith in New York , as well as international relations and development at Université Gaston Berger de Saint-Louis in Senegal.
I do freelance and volunteer writing, grant-writing and french translation for non-profits in the tri-state area.

c'est trop bien, cette chanson de magic system!
such a great melody and it so perfectly summarizes the 'quete d'identité' that so many related to me while i lived in the 11eme in paris.
